MP calls for Duke of York to have title stripped
An MP has called for Prince Andrew to have his Duke of York title stripped following the controversy of his sexual abuse case and friendship with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Labour’s Rachel Maskell, MP for York Central, has renewed her calls to have the Duke of York title taken away from Prince Andrew after his sexual abuse US case.
Yestderday evening it was announced that Prince Andrew and Ms Giuffre had reached an out of court settlement.
The document declared that the Prince would pay an undisclosed amount of money to Ms Giuffre and her charity.
In light of this settlement, Ms Maskell stated that the Prince must remove his association with the city.
Speaking on BBC Radio York, she said: “I would appeal to Andrew to say he could drop that title and request it is no longer used. Perhaps that would be the best way forward.”
Her call has been echoed by York’s Liberal Democrats.
They say: “Having been stripped of his military roles and royal patronages by the Queen, this should be the end of his direct link with our great city.”
Earlier this year, Ms Maskell called for a debate on how aristocratic titles using a name from a geographical location are assigned after saying the Duke of York’s title was “untenable”.
Ms Maskell said: “My city of York has developed an interest about how titles are assigned and how they can be removed from people who take the name of a geographical location in their title.
“York has a global reputation, not just through its rich cultural heritage but for the social values it espouses”, she said.
