Warning issued after ‘serious’ house fire

Humberside Fire and Rescue have issued a warning following a serious house fire in Scunthorpe last week.

The incident was caused by a laptop which overheated while left unattended and on charge on a bed.

The soft bedding caused the air vents to become blocked and stopping the device from cooling as it charged.

Thankfully nobody was harmed as a result of the incident, however the property has been left completely uninhabitable.

This comes a week after a house fire in Grimsby prompted the organisation to issue another warning, urging people to close internal doors overnight.

The forward thinking in the household concerned prevented the fire from spreading to other parts of the property.

These photos were taken after the fire service had attended the property and extinguished the fire.

Thankfully, it was contained to the kitchen before the crew arrived.

A spokesperson for Humberside Fire and Rescue said: “Make closing your internal doors at night part of your bedtime routine.

“These photos are from a fire that was thankfully contained to the kitchen before our crews arrived.

“When you are asleep, it takes longer to notice the signs of fire.”

Steve Duffield, Prevention and Protection Group Manager at Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, added:

“It is a busy time of year and this means fire safety is often pushed out of our minds.

“Many people will be cooking on a larger scale than usual and using candles more frequently.

“If distracted, the number of fire related incidents can increase.”

In addition to closing internal doors at night, the organisation has urged residents to take simple steps to help prevent fires.

These include having a smoke alarm fitted and testing they are working regularly, ensuring all electrical appliances are turned off and unplugged at night, and putting candles and cigarettes out properly.

You should also ensure that all exits, including windows, are kept clear.
