Humberside Police Federation Chairman calls for pay rise for officers

The chairman of the Humberside Police Federation has called for a pay rise for police officers.

Mr Lee Sims has shared his anger that officers were not prioritised for the vaccination programme during the initial rollout, criticising the government for their lack of recognition.

He also went on to criticise the government for not giving police officers a pay rise in 2021 despite ‘all [their] superb work.’

In a statement shared to Facebook the Chairman said: “Sadly just as we thought things might have been returning to some sense of normality, the OMICRON variant has seen us once again having to respond and hope that we can avoid illness and remain supporting our colleagues at work and keeping our families safe.

“It remains incredible and insulting that police officers were not prioritised for the Covid-19 vaccine in the first place.

“And – despite all the superb work by colleagues – that we were not given a penny of a pay rise in 2021 by a Government that has claimed to have policing’s back.

“Police officers need to receive a significant pay rise to recognise the work that they do. And the Government needs to end the uncertainty around our pensions in a fair and just way.”

Mr Sims then went on to state that the Federation will work alongside officers to ‘influence and negotiate locally’ any concerns that they have.

Back in July of this year, police officers were left outraged at a government decision to freeze the pay of officers who earned over £24,000 a year.

The Home Office claimed the freeze was needed to protect jobs as the country faces an economic crisis brought on by the pandemic but many officers felt they were being cheated out of a pay rise they both needed and deserved.
