Mariners look to stay top against ‘surprising’ Wealdstone
Paul Hurst’s table-topping Town look to stay at the summit of the National League as they travel 186 miles to Wealdstone on Tuesday night.
This is set to be the first ever meeting between the two sides.
The Mariners are optimistic of extending their current league winning run to five games, while Wealdstone have only won two games all season.
Paul Hurst is not taking anything for granted however, warning of their threat in his pre-match press conference.
“I think that [Wealdstone’s win record] has been a little misleading, overall, in terms of how they’ve performed at times.
“They play some good football and that was a nice surprise, with how they play and how they want to play themselves up the pitch.”
“They’ve had a couple of good results, a couple that they won’t be too happy with, but overall, they’ve been relatively good.”
While their style of play may impress the Mariners manager, it has not produced impressive results and they lie in 17th place, just three points clear of the relegation zone.
The travelling Grimsby fans will be hooping for a more impressive performance than their 2-0 victory over Yeovil at the weekend, which was unconvincing but got the important victory.
With such a long trip, the win will take priority over the performance Hurst saying, “the biggest thing is to keep this run going.”
“You feel like you could do more [preparation] but that’s just schedules and the way that it is.”
There are no fresh injury concerns from Saturday’s win at Blundell Park.
John McAtee and Harry Clifton are going to be ‘checked on’ after they reported slight fatigue issues but both are expected to be in the squad.
Ryan Taylor is expected to remain out for the trip as it is suspected he is one of the victims of the club’s recent positive COVID results.
A win for Town could see them go seven points clear, if other results go their way.
