By £14 million flood defences completed at South Ferriby
Leader of North Lincolnshire Council Rob Waltham has welcomed the completion of flood defences in South Ferriby which will help to protect residents and businesses alike.
The landmark £14 million project has seen roughly three kilometres of new and raised defences built, reducing the flood risk for 150 properties, 3,000 hectares of agricultural land and vital infrastructure.
Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, joined Sir James Bevan, Chief Executive of the Environment Agency at the official opening of the defences.
Cllr Waltham said: “We were determined to find a comprehensive flood defence solution for the people of South Ferriby and I’m proud to say that this has now been completed.
“We all remember the heartbreaking scenes of destruction wrought by the tidal surge in 2013 and resolved to protect the community from similar events in the future.
“The completion of these works should bring peace of mind to residents and businesses, with the height of the defences meaning protections will be in place for many years to come.”
The improvements to the flood defences at South Ferriby are part of the ongoing investment in tidal flood risk management around the Humber.
Work is now underway on around 20 homes in Winteringham to install property flood resilience measures.
