Scunthorpe MP responds to safety of MPs after tragic incident

Scunthorpe MP Holly Mumby-Croft appeared on BBC Radio Humberside on Monday morning (18 October) following the tragic death of Conservative MP Sir David Amess.

When asked if she felt safe the MP responded: “I think generally I feel safe and certainly when I’m out and talking to people I feel safe, but like most MPs, I’ve received threats over the last 18 months and I feel that it is something that happens quite regularly to me and my colleagues.”

Holly Mumby-Croft went on to tell BBC Humberside that she’d had three ‘proper’ threats in her time as MP, one leading to a restraining order and suspended sentence while another is still ongoing with Humberside Police.

Radio host Burnsy went on to ask what measures police are offering in the wake of the ‘tragic incident’ to which Holly replied: “Humberside Police contacted me and I understand police contacted all MPs over the weekend. I spoke to Humberside Police on Friday and they were keen to understand whether I had surgeries booked in the next few days to find out if there was anything they could do to support me so in my experience they have been extremely helpful to me throughout my time as an MP.”

Finally, the Scunthorpe MP was asked if there was anything she’d like to see to improve MP safety: “It’s really complex. None of us ever want to be in a position, in fact I refuse to be in a position where we can’t speak to our constituents, the people we do the job for. I don’t ever want to be in that position.”

“It’s very complex and I think we’re going to have to listen to the experts on this one and see what they come back with. We don’t do things we think are particularly risky but we never want to be in a position where we can’t walk around Tesco or wherever we do our shopping in Scunthorpe or meet or talk to constituents because we need to be able to do our jobs.”
