Montagu Hospital to improve diagnostic testing with £3m fund

Montagu Hospital is set to develop a one-stop shop for diagnostic testing as it is named one of two new Community Diagnostic Hubs within the region.

The two new centres, The Glass Works in Barnsley and Montagu Hospital in Mexborough, received £3m of capital funding altogether.

The funding was secured by the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Integrated Care System (SYBICS) for diagnostic centres.

It is part of a fund of £350m that will go towards creating 40 new Community Diagnostic Centres nationwide.

The aim is to allow people to take tests faster so that they can receive their diagnoses quicker and start treatment sooner.

The Montagu Hospital will obtain CT and MRI services alongside their pre-existing diagnostics deliveries, phlebotomy procedures, point of care testing and physiological measurement.

The new one-stop shops will provide checks, scans and tests totalling up to an estimated 2.8 million scans in their first year.

It will also improve health inequalities as well as access to both Doncaster and Worksop hospitals as a result.

Professor Des Breen, Medical Director for the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Integrated Care System, told DBTH: “When people are unwell and experiencing ongoing signs or symptoms, their doctor might request diagnostic tests to confirm or rule out specific conditions or diseases.

“The Community Diagnostic Centres will be […] in convenient locations, often closer to where people live or easier to get to than larger hospital sites, that will provide diagnostic testing.

“The aspiration is that in the long-term patients will be able to visit a local facility and have all (or as many as possible of) their tests done in the same place and on the same day.

“This would prevent patients from having to move backwards and forwards across healthcare sites as much as they currently do, from NHS site to NHS site, from specialist to specialist.”

The new centre should be developed within two phases in the next few months.
