Women’s Lives Matter vigil to honour domestic abuse victims
On Sunday 10 October, from 3:00pm to 5:00pm, Women’s Lives Matter will be hosting a vigil at Elmfield Park in Doncaster to honour victims of domestic abuse.
Th vigil, ‘Not One Woman More’, comes after the recent murders of women such as Sarah Everard and Sabina Nessa.
It will remember those that did not survive the gender-based attacks/violence that happen to many women across the nation.
A statement from the community’s Facebook page said: “Violence against Women and Girls is at an all time high- this is an epidemic.
“241 women in the UK were killed in 2019, the highest number in a decade.
“In 2020, it was estimated that 1.6 million women in the UK were victims of Domestic Abuse.
In 2020, Domestic Abuse cases in Doncaster have increased by 16%.
“8 women have been murdered in South Yorkshire during the lockdown, males were arrested in all cases.”
The majority of domestic abuse/violence cases are carried out by males to females.
Whilst there are incidents of the opposite occurring, this particular community highlights the disadvantages women face in society with regard to safety and how change must happen.
The community has suggested that politicians should “step up and increase funding for specialist services to keep women and their families safe.”
They believe it is vital that no further cuts occur to these essential services.
The Women’s Lives Matter vigil will be a peaceful event.
The public may bring flowers and banners as a show of support to the victims.
