Local people encouraged to get involved in Grimsby ice hockey scene
A local ice hockey player is speaking out in a bid to encourage people in the area to get involved in the Grimsby ice hockey scene.
Dan Jefferson, originally from Louth, started playing with the Grimsby Falcons team this year, and claims many people aren’t aware that there is an ice hockey team in Grimsby.
He told Gi Media: “It would be nice for it to progress into something a bit more official, but the problem is people don’t really know it’s there.
“It’s unheard of really that it’s available for adults, so hopefully we get a few people down to come and watch it, and maybe they can try and have a go, and we can get a few more people to join the club.
“Not just adults, kids as well – and hopefully we can keep it going a long while and get into leagues and a bit more regular.
The team are currently gearing up to play against The Cheshire Pistons team tomorrow (Saturday 18 September) at Grimsby Ice Rink.
The match is completely free for people to go and watch, and will take place from 4pm.
Dan continued: “It’s been a long time since the team’s played, so I think everyone’s excited to play – a bit eager to get going – but at the same time it’s a new team that we don’t know anything about, so we’re a little bit apprehensive about what they’ll be like.
“With recreational hockey, you say you’re a beginner’s team, but the skill level can be massively different.
“Hopefully it’s a fairly equal game, and it’s not so much one team slaughtering the other.
“I’d like it if we got a bit of a fan base going and came to our games when we’re at home and got into it a little bit and hopefully want to have a go themselves.”
When asked about how people in North East Lincolnshire can go about getting involved in ice hockey, Dan said they can join the beginner session which is held on Saturday mornings at Grimsby Ice Rink.
“Joining the beginner session on Saturday morning at Grimsby is the best way to start, and then joining the intermediate session and progressing into one of the teams,” he said.
“If you’re not quite sure you can do that, just learn to skate. Get on a public session at the ice rink, it’s a great facility, just get yourself down there at a public session and have a go at skating and see how you are.
“There’s plenty of people around there who will give you advice if you’re struggling.
“Don’t be put off by any of it – it’s not like you see on TV, it’s not as physical as that.”
If you’re interested in joining the sessions, contact Grimsby Ice Rink on 01472 476029 or via their Facebook page.
There’s no need to purchase any kit, either – this can all be borrowed from the Grimsby Falcons team.
