Doncaster’s virtual Recovery Games goes global

One of the UK’s largest events, Doncaster’s Recovery Games, is set to go international this year as it tries out a virtual format.

The annual event, which was sadly cancelled last year due to the pandemic, will celebrate Doncaster locals who have successfully beaten their alcohol or drug addictions.

It is part of National Recovery Month which, this year, has a theme of ‘Recovery is for everyone: every person, every family, every community’.

It has been organised by Aspire Drug and Alcohol Service (managed by Rotherham Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust and funded by sponsorships) and Hull charity The Alcohol and Drug Service.

It will be hosted in Canada by Peter Pula and Yvonne Hollandy from Axiom News which promotes community-building around the globe.

22 British teams will be taking part alongside a new entry from Sarajevo, Bosnia called Team Celebrate Recovery.

The teams must complete five complex challenges in their hometowns by Tuesday 28 September, uploading their videos and forms of proof to the Recovery Games 2021 website or Facebook page.

They are then brought together virtually for the finale which will take place via zoom on Thursday 30 September from 1:30pm to 5:00pm (BST).

The initial five challenges include:

  1. The Virtual Big Quiz: 70 timed questions and puzzles (30 minutes)
  2. Walk of the Warrior: six teams, prize for team who walks the longest distance
  3. Challenge Scavenger Hunt: 10 activities, including ‘festival of colours’, most liked photos win (two weeks)
  4. Challenge the Recovery Row: three team members complete synchronised rowing motions, most full rotations wins (two minutes)
  5. Inspirado Connect resource: teams compete for ‘recovery chips’, sharing their experiences with addiction and recovery (one hour)

The team with the best costumes will also win a bonus 100 points.

The overall winner will be awarded Doncaster’s Recovery Games trophy as well as £250 in cash.

The runner-up and third place winners will receive £150 and £100 respectively.

Trophies will also be available to the winner of each of the five challenges.

Aspire Senior Day Programme Lead, Neil Firbank, told RDaSH: “This is the seventh Recovery Games and Covid has forced us to move away from our normal annual setting at Doncaster’s Hatfield Activity Centre, where teams have gathered to compete against each other in a day of gladiator style games and obstacle courses.”

Aspire Manager Stuart Green told RDaSH: “We have continued to provide drug and alcohol treatment solutions to Doncaster people throughout the pandemic by adapting our way of working to enable our colleagues and clients to stay safe and have now done the same for the Recovery Games.”
