Lorry driver jailed after A1 collision
A lorry driver has been handed a two-year jail sentence following a serious collision on the A1.
On November 25 2020, Christopher Swain 38, ignored a lane closure before smashing into the back of a stationary police car injuring two officers.
PC Christopher Windsor-Beck and PC Matt Brand were assisting a broken down lorry at the time, according to Lincolnshire Police.
They suffered fractures to the spine, broken ribs and a broken collarbone as a result of the incident.
Swain pleaded guilty at Lincoln Crown Court on Tuesday to causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
He was also over the prescribed limit for cannabis, and has now been disqualified from driving for four years and ordered to retake another driving test.
Sgt Dan McCormack said: “The dangers of getting behind the wheel after using any drug are highlighted in this incident.
“The driver’s reaction times were greatly impeded, and I have no doubt that this was the main contributing factor to this accident.
“PC Brand and PC Windsor-Beck are still recovering but have returned to work and are incredibly thankful for all the support they’ve received from their colleagues as well as the public.”
