National daily cases of Covid-19 has fallen, according to latest figures

The number of people in the UK who are testing positive for Covid-19 has fallen, according to the latest daily figures.

For five days in a row, the number of new infections reported has fallen for the first time since February.

It is also the first time since the start of the coronavirus pandemic that a drop in cases for this amount of time has not coincided with a national lockdown.

The data as of 25 July shows the seven-day average of daily confirmed cases now stands at 38,268.

This is showing a 15.4 percent decline compared to the week before.

Professor Paul Hunter from the University of East Anglia told the BBC: “The data at present is looking good for at least the summer.

“Today’s figures do not of course include any impact of last Monday’s end of restrictions. It will not be until about next Friday before the data includes the impact of this change.”

In addition, the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) suggest that 92 percent of adults in the UK have antibodies to Covid-19 in their blood – through a previous infection with the virus or at least one vaccination dose.
