UK records lowest daily death toll for six weeks

The UK has recorded its lowest coronavirus death and case totals in weeks, after another 373 deaths with the disease and a further 15,845 new infections were confirmed on Sunday.

In the last 24 hours over 500,000 Covid-19 vaccinations were recorded, with the roll out continuing to progress rapidly each day. 

Latest data takes the total to 12,014,288 first doses and 511,447 second doses for the UK. 

Sunday’s figures are the fewest reported daily deaths since December 28 and the lowest number of cases since December 8.

The decreasing trend is still continuing however figures tend to not update as accurately over the weekend compared to week days. 

Since the start of the pandemic case numbers total 3,945,680 and there have been 112,465 deaths.

Nadhim Zahawi said he was ‘confident’ that over 50s in the UK would all be offered a first jab by May.

There have been a further 461 new cases in Wales, taking the total number of confirmed infections there to 196,060. 

Public Health Wales also reported another 28 deaths, bringing the toll since the start of the pandemic to 4,989.

In Scotland, 584 new cases and a further seven deaths have been recorded.

That brings the country’s respective totals to 185,792 cases and 6,438 deaths.

Northern Ireland recorded a further 334 new cases, taking the total to 106,867. 

In Northern Ireland 1,931 people have now died with the disease.

The government is predicting there to be a surge in the South African variant across the UK in coming weeks after mass testing was conducted last week. 

Vaccination roll out is still continuing rapidly and scientists have said most vaccines are showing promising effectiveness against current variants. 

More data and tests will be produced in the coming weeks while trials are ongoing.
