Pubs could reopen as early as April

Temporary ‘booze ban’ being considered as part of Government’s roadmap for lifting lockdown.

It’s been reported that pubs could reopen as early as April – but without serving alcohol.

Boris Johnson has warned that it is “still early days” to start talking about opening up society, and he has committed to setting out a “road map” later this month for easing restrictions.

He faces pressure from Conservative MPs to relax the current lockdown once the most vulnerable have been vaccinated, and Downing Street has confirmed that the vaccine programme planned to reach all those aged 50 and over, as well as adults aged 16-65 in an at-risk group, by May.

Up to 87 million pints of beer will be thrown away as a result of pub closures during Covid lockdowns around the UK, an industry body has calculated.

The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) called the waste an equivalent to £331m in sales utterly “heartbreaking”.

The BBPA has worked out, from industry feedback, that 70 million pints of beer were thrown away during the first lockdown.
