Work set to start on new lifeboat house as early as Spring 2021

Work could reportedly start on the construction of Cleethorpes’ long-awaited new lifeboat house, proposed to be located on the beach across the road from their current station as soon as Spring 2021.

There is a longstanding planning consent for the development, but there has been several glitches along the way.

The last issue is said to concern the significance of a timber groyne and the extent, if any, to which it needs to be retained.

The RNLI has applied for its removal with the fate of the groyne due to be determined in the New Year by North East Lincolnshire Council planners.

As reported by blogger ‘The Wryneck’, it is important that construction of the lifeboat station is undertaken in Spring and Summer because these are the seasons when most of the protected shorebirds are not present at Cleethorpes while they breed in the Arctic.

A downside of the project is that the new building is proposed to impose onto the central beach.

Judging by the pier, the support may be unattractive, with the additional concern that it may serve as a location for antisocial behaviour and littering.

However, it will enable the lifeboat teams to launch quicker – a crucial consideration when it comes to attending life-threatening rescue missions.
