Brexit talks enter critical deadline day

Prime Minister says things are ‘looking difficult’ in Brexit trade talks with the EU

The UK and EU will keep talking in a bid to strike a Brexit trade deal, but the PM has admitted that “things are looking difficult” as the clock ticks towards the 31st of December.

With time running out, the Boris Johnson stated:

“Obviously the UK’s position is always that we want to keep talking if there’s any chance of a deal”.

“But we’ve also got to recognise that the UK’s got to be able to control its own laws, it’s what people voted for, and we’ve also got to be able to control our waters and fishing rights”.

He added:

“Our door is open, we’ll keep talking, but I have to say things are looking difficult”.

“There’s a gap that needs to be bridged”.

The PM has acknowledged that a no-deal Brexit may be difficult at first, but reiterated that the UK would “prosper mightily” under should the scenario come to be.

Michel Barnier, when speaking to the EU Parliment, said the next few hours were the “moment of truth”.

He added:

“We have very little time remaining, just a few hours to work through these negotiations in a useful fashion if we want this agreement to enter into force on the 1st of January”.

“There is a chance of getting an agreement but the path to such an agreement is very narrow”.

He later admitted:

“We have to be prepared for all eventualities”.

Whilst Guy Verhofstadt, the EU Parliament’s Brexit co-ordinator, said:

“It’s like always in politics, it happens always at the end”.
