Sadness as family business announces retirement

A family business that has been open in Grimsby for 120 years is set to close.

Moisers, in Freeman Street, that has sold nursery and baby equipment to generations of families, has given customers notice of a decision to retire in March.

The Moisers team, who also sell sewing machines, said Covid and an “unknown Brexit” had been major factors in the decision.

A notice to customers said: “This hasn’t been an easy decision but after a very testing year for us all, it has certainly made us stop and evaluate our work/life balance and spending time with family.

“The year started with the Covid pandemic sending us all online and forcing all shops to close.

“We are now coming to the end of the year and after surviving Black Friday deals we are now facing long delays at the ports for stock, which will only get worse with an unknown Brexit.”

It also said: “Wow! What an achievement it has been being part of a successful family business, passing down the generations for 120 years! Can’t be bad… but everything has to come to an end sometime and we know March 2021 is that time.”

The owners have pledged to look after current customers and will be contacting them and new sales are still welcome.

The statement on Facebook added: “May we say a massive thank you to everyone who has supported us over the years and bought from us through your own generations – it has been an honour and a pleasure to serve you all and we hope we can make our closure as amicable and smooth as possible, and once again be proud of our customer service.”

The news was met with huge disappointment on social media.

One customer wrote: “So sad to hear this, huge loss of another fantastic shop for this area but wish you all well for your retirement.”

While another said: “What an end of an era….. I bought my prams from you for my babies 38 years ago and they have bought from you for their children. Such a lovely shop with personal service. Enjoy your retirement. You will be missed.”
