Covid cases fall in North East Lincolnshire

North East Lincolnshire now has the 61st highest weekly rate of Covid-19 cases in England, according to the latest data.

The daily number of new cases of Covid-19 has fallen significantly from the peak in early November.

A total of 5,420 residents of North East Lincolnshire have had a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 which is an increase of 254 cases over the last week (compared with 346 new cases reported the previous week and 652 the week before).

Last week we reported how North East Lincolnshire had the 16th highest weekly rate of COVID-19 cases in England.

The weekly rate of new COVID-19 infections in the borough now stands at 196 per 100,000, compared with a rate of 316 per 100,000 one week ago, “representing a significant downward trend and our lowest rate since mid October”, according to the latest epidemiology report for the area released by the council today.

In North East Lincolnshire analysis of cases confirmed since the middle of November shows that the majority continue to be in the working age population, with slightly more occurring in women than men.

Our rate of new cases in the over-65s escalated substantially during October and early November but has since reduced significantly.

Geographically cases are occurring in all parts of the borough with the highest numbers over the last two weeks reported in Heneage and South wards.
Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals (NLaG) report that there are 64 patients with confirmed Covid-19 in Grimsby Hospital (as of 7th December), a reduction of 7 from the previous week. However numbers in the hospital remain more than twice as high as the peak of the first wave.

The number of cases in our care homes grew substantially in the last month although numbers are now much reduced from the peak two weeks ago. Currently 16 care homes are reporting a total of 68 residents with COVID-19.

The number of deaths with COVID-19 recorded on the death registration has grown substantially since the end of September with 146 deaths recorded since then compared with just one between July and September.

More than 100 deaths were registered during the month of November, representing more than half of all COVID-19 deaths that have been registered in North East Lincolnshire since the start of pandemic.

The overall number of deaths registered during the month was more than 50% higher than the typical number of deaths for this time of year.

Most of the deaths that have occurred in the second wave of the pandemic in our area have occurred in the over-80s with men accounting for 70% of deaths overall.

Half of all COVID-19 related deaths in North East Lincolnshire residents that have occurred in the second wave have been residents of care homes.
