Student travel window open from today

To ensure that students can be home at the end of the winter term, but also reduce any transmission risk, the government asked that students return home once the national restrictions lifted on the 2nd of December, in a student travel window lasting from the 3rd to the 9th of December.

The mass Covid testing of students began in universities on Monday – with temporary testing centres set up in sports halls and rooms on campus.

Before leaving for Christmas, students have been encouraged to have two tests, three days apart – and to travel within 24 hours of receiving a second negative test result.

This should be in line with specific arrangements put in place by their HE provider, those of which have been asked to end in-person teaching and switch to online-only classes by December the 9th.

Students will also have staggered starting dates for returning to universities in England after Christmas – with some students not returning until the 7th of February, 2021.
