Second mass vaccination site confirmed

Charnwood Borough Council, which covers the town of Loughborough in Leicestershire, has now confirmed that part of their council building will be handed over to MOD teams by mid-December “for at least 9 months” to act as a mass vaccination site.

Charnwood council leader Jonathan Morgan says the building, which is currently an office, will act as a vaccination site for “around 185,000 people in the area”.

A council spokesperson said:

“We feel very excited to be at the forefront of this, and as soon as a vaccine is ready, this site will be ready to go”.

“The council has supported residents and local businesses throughout the pandemic”.

“We would be proud to play our part in the vaccination programme”.

“The offices have capacity as many more staff are working from home and that is a trend that is likely to continue long term”.

This comes after it was confirmed this morning that Derby Arena was being considered as another site.

Cllr Chris Poulter, leader of Derby City Council, said:

“Derby Arena is a world class venue in its own right, and we’re delighted that it’s being considered as a mass COVID-19 vaccination site”.

‘The potential roll-out of a COVID vaccine is a welcome step in the nationwide effort against the spread of COVID-19 – it’s an honour for Derby to have the opportunity to play such a critical part in any vaccination programme”.

‘The Arena is a perfect venue; it has plenty of space, parking, and good transport networks to serve Derby, Derbyshire and beyond”.

“We’re still in discussions about practicalities but are very keen to be able to facilitate this”.
