By A new app will allow hungry customers in Grimsby to order food from around 20 independent restaurants to their home – many for the first time.
The Grimsby & Clee Eats app has launched with an exclusive list of local favourites. Beast Burger, Healing Hotel Manor, Stone Oven Pizza and Riverhead Coffee are just some of the options available. The app hopes to compete with more well-known brands like Just Eat by offering fairer prices to restaurants and bringing exclusive venues on board.
Owner Wayne Russell said: “While I was on furlough in the lockdown, I discovered a great app which allowed people to order food from independent restaurants in Barrow-in-Furness, where I’m originally from. I asked them if they would consider bringing it North East Lincolnshire, and when I was inevitably made redundant, I took the leap of becoming their first franchise. I’m really excited to have 20 restaurants already on board, with more getting in touch all of the time. Around half of these have never offered delivery through a website or app before. We’ve got a range of amazing street food, cafes, delis and cocktail bars, so there’s something for everyone. Within six months, I think we’ll have 70 to 80 places that have signed up.”

I work with many local businesses that I knew could benefit from this app, plus it fits perfectly with our Loyal to Local campaign that was launched in June to encourage people to shop locally. The app means that the people of our town have access to some of our amazing eateries at home, which is fantastic, especially as we enter Tier 2.”
E-Factor Business worked with Grimsby and Clee Eats to connect them with local businesses and also help with 1:1 support, along with mentor coaching.
Delivery giants like Just Eat and Food Hub already dominate in this market, but Wayne’s confident his independent, local approach will be successful.
“People don’t realise how much commission these big apps charge the restaurants and takeaways – it’s really inflated,” he said.
“The process has a detrimental effect on the independent venues, but they feel it’s a necessary evil. Grimsby & Clee Eats doesn’t charge anywhere near that, and we’re interested in showing off this great local food and getting it in front of people. Lockdown has also changed how people see takeaways. You might want some amazing, restaurant-quality food but not feel safe going out, or the experience might not feel the same as before. Now a lot of restaurants that had never thought about delivering their food are looking into that option on a permanent basis.”
Wayne has some recommendations for people looking for something different.
“Joe’s Hut, which is based in Clee Hotel, does incredible Jamaican food,” he said. “Shaneys in Scartho is really good at offering options whether you’re a meat-eater, vegetarian or vegan. But there’s so many great options, it’s hard to go wrong!”
The app is available now on the Apple or Google Play stores. Users can filter through the available options by the type of food, such as burgers, desserts, sandwiches or vegan.
