Labour has suspended former leader Jeremy Corbyn from the party over his response to a damning report into anti-semitism.

Mr Corbyn said anti-semitism in the party was “overstated” following the judgement from the equality watchdog, which identified “serious failings” in dealing with anti-Jewish racism.

And the watchdog said Mr Corbyn’s office had “politically interfered” in the complaints process.

A Labour spokesman said: “In light of his comments made today and his failure to retract them subsequently, the Labour party has suspended Jeremy Corbyn pending investigation. He has also had the whip removed from the parliamentary Labour party.”

The Equality and Human Rights Commission found Labour had committed three breaches of the civil law Equality Act under Mr Corbyn’s leadership.

It found “political interference” from Mr Corbyn’s office staff in 23 complaints – including one against the leader himself.

Mr Corbyn today said he did not accept all the EHRC’s findings and added: “My team acted to speed up, not hinder the process.”

In a 270-word statement, he said “of course” there is anti-Semitism in the party but turned his fire on “opponents” and the media for exaggerating the problem.

“One antisemite is one too many, but the scale of the problem was also dramatically overstated for political reasons by our opponents inside and outside the party, as well as by much of the media,” he wrote.
