Coronavirus Halloween masks slammed as ‘distasteful’
A major online retailer has pledged to remove a series of “hugely distasteful” coronavirus-themed Halloween masks that are being sold through its website.
The latex heads resemble what the Covid-19 virus looks like under a microscope, with the addition of haunting eyes and jagged teeth, and are available on Amazon.
A spokesperson for Amazon has confirmed the costumes, some of which were being sold for more than £100 and thought to be coming from China, were being removed from sale.
One seller’s description said: “Wearing this mask will give a stunning and lasting impression of a life time at any events you attend. When attending a party, this mask will attract people’s attention.
“Breathable and fashionable, to fit most children and adults. Let you immediately become the focus of attention in the crowd.
“This mask is suitable for Halloween, Christmas, Easter, Carnival, masquerade, party or a nightclub. In any case, it sometimes sees a different Halloween with multiple functions!”
Rachel Power, Chief Executive of the Patients Association, told the Sun: “These masks show a terrible lapse of judgement by the manufacturers and sellers, and I hope they will be removed from sale quickly.
“I’ve no doubt the great majority of people will find them hugely distasteful, and I can’t imagine that many people would wish to wear one.”
An Amazon spokesperson told MailOnline: “All sellers must follow our selling guidelines and those who do not will be subject to action including potential removal of their account.
“These products are being removed.”
More than 40,000 Brits have lost their lives since the beginning of the pandemic in March.
The global coronavirus death toll passed the grim milestone of one million this week.
