Man suspected of Croydon police officer shooting is named
The man suspected of having fired the shot which lead to the tragic death of Sgt Matt Ranata, 54, has been named as Louis De Zoysa.
The 23-year-old suspect from Norbury, South London, remains in critical condition himself, and has therefore not been spoken to by detectives.
Sgt Ratana moved to the UK from New Zealand in 1989, and joined the Met Police two years later.
According to police reports, he was attacked by the man, who was handcuffed and who investigators say then shot himself.
He died of his injuries on Friday. No police weapons were fired.
The case is not being treated as terror-related, the Met Police have confirmed.
Yesterday, the man suspected of having supplied the firearm was arrested and taken into custody at a South London police station.
Sgt Matt Ranata is the eighth officer in the UK to be shot dead in the last 20 years.
“Officers investigating the murder of Sgt Matt Ratana continue to work around the clock as part of a detailed and thorough investigation.
“The searches and forensic examination of the scene in Pollards Hill have been concluded and the cordons have now been removed.
“The suspect for Matt’s shooting remains in hospital. He is in a critical condition and consequently we are not able to speak to him.”
