Thousands attend anti-restrictions protest
Thousands of protestors have gathered for an anti-coronavirus-restrictions demonstration in Trafalgar Square, London.
Video footage shows that few of those in attendance appeared to be social distancing or wearing masks, as they carried placards reading “we do not consent”.
This comes as London is placed on the coronavirus watch list amid rising cases.
No additional restrictions have been announced, but residents have been urged to comply with restrictions
Rules in England limit indoor and outdoor gatherings to six people, with some exceptions.
Current guidance states that protests and demonstrations are exempt from the rule-of-six restrictions.
However, organisers must submit a risk assessment and comply with social distancing.
The Met Police attended the demonstration, surrounding protestors to contain them in Trafalgar Square.
At least three protestors were treated by paramedics following clashes with the police, with several others being led away in handcuffs.
The majority of the crowd have now dispersed.
A statement issued by the Met Police reads:
“Crowds in Trafalgar Square have not complied with the conditions of their risk assessment and are putting people in danger of transmitting the virus.
“This has voided their risk assessment and we have informed the event organisers they are no longer exempt from the regulations.
“By leaving now, you can keep yourself safe and avoid any enforcement action being taken by officers.”
