By Action over public drinking in Doncaster
South Yorkshire Police have issued a warning after they were forced to take action against people drinking alcohol in public in Doncaster town centre.
On Sunday officers stopped people from drinking pints while sitting in Sir Nigel Gresley Square.
The area is covered by Doncaster’s Public Spaces Protection order for nearly three years.
PC Gemma Ibbitson said:
“Under the PSPO it is an offence to consume alcohol whilst not on a licensed premise and/or have alcohol in open containers in a public place in the area covered.
“On this occasion those committing the offence were offered advice and not prosecuted – however they did have to pour their pints away at £4 a pop.
“Further enforcement will continue in this area to ensure that members of the public are aware and to ensure premises in the area serving the alcohol are advising people that it is to be consumed at home and not in public.”
Police are now warning that they will take further action.
The Council have said that they believe a renewed and revised Public Spaces Protection Order would help to tackle anti-social behaviour.
A public consultation is underway to assess the need.
