New safety measures on South Yorkshire busses
Bus operator First have announced that a series of new safety and social distancing measures will be introduced on its South Yorkshire busses, with a view to keeping staff and passengers safe.
The firm is rolling out a raft of changes during the coronavirus crisis including face coverings on buses, leaving seats empty and not standing.
Giles Fearnley, managing director of First said:
“First Bus has responded to government advice to enable social distancing on public transport and with immediate effect you’ll start to notice additional steps being taken to ensure a safe journey for everyone as we keep our services running for essential travel and key workers.”
Buses will operate at a reduced capacity with around 1 in 4 seats being available.
Other bus operators have announced that they will be going entirely cashless, or only accepting correct change.
Despite busses running, people are advised to only make essential journeys and where possible travel off peak to avoid busy times.
Occasionally a bus may not stop, most likely as it has reached its reduced seating capacity. If the bus does stop, but is near capacity, busses may operate a one in, one out system.
First will no longer allow passengers to stand, passengers will be required to wear face coverings, and windows must now remain open.
