By Doncaster’s coronavirus death toll rises again
The coronavirus death toll in Doncaster has risen once again, as another 187 fatalities are recorded in England.
Doncaster’s death toll now stands at 145, which is an increase of four since yesterday.
Locally, there have been 240 deaths in Sheffield, which is an increase of two since yesterday; 134 in Rotherham, which is an increase of one and 109 in Barnsley, which is also an increase of one.
However, hospital chiefs at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust have said that they are ‘turning the tide’ on coronavirus after the number of people allowed home after successful treatment passed 200.
A spokesperson added:
“Our colleagues are currently waging a very different kind of war against this virus, however, together with our colleagues across the NHS and the world, we are starting to turn the tide.”
Prime Minister Boris Johnson issued new guidelines last Sunday evening, stating that those in construction and manufacturing, and who are unable to work at home should now be “actively encouraged” to return to work.
Mr Johnson also permitted people to engage in “unlimited outdoor exercise”.
Subsequently, Dominic Raab indicated that people would not be expected to go back to work until Wednesday.
In response to Mr Raab’s statement on Monday morning’s BBC Breakfast show , Shadow Business Secretary and MP for Doncaster North Ed Miliband tweeted:
“The PM didn’t say workplace changes applied from Wednesday. He said ‘And the first step is a change of emphasis that we hope that people will act on this week.’ Wednesday was only mentioned in relation to other changes. Words matter. Clarity is essential. This is shambolic.”
“Ordering a return to work in manufacturing and construction with 12 hours notice and no official guidance on how workers can keep safe is irresponsible and wrong.”
