By British travellers told “come home while you still can”
Amid the chaos caused by the coronavirus outbreak, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has warned British travellers that “the time to come home is now, while you still can.”
This is ahead of the the closure of further air routes, which the Foreign and Commonwealth Office have said may come within the next 48 hours, and possibly without notice.
Britons who are currently travelling abroad are being urged to return to the UK immediately.
A statement issued by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said tourists that and short-stay travellers should come home while commercial flights remain available:
“Today’s update reflects the pace at which international travel is becoming more difficult with the closure of borders, airlines suspending flights, airports closing, exit bans and further restrictions being introduced daily.”
Foreign secretary Dominic Raab added:
“Around the world, more airlines are suspending flights and more airports are closing, some without any notice.
Where commercial routes don’t exist, our staff are working round the clock to give advice and support to UK nationals. If you are on holiday abroad the time to come home is now while you still can.”
The UK government has has called for international action to keep air routes open long enough to enable international travellers to return on commercial flights. Some British tourists abroad have already experienced difficulty returning to the UK because of restrictions.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office are urging against all but essential international travel for 30 days.
This comes as the World Health Organisation warn the global pandemic is “accelerating”.
