Doncaster’s Terri Harper is to defend her World Boxing Council super-featherweight title
It has been confirmed that Doncaster’s Terri Harper, 23, is set to defend her World Boxing Council / WBC super-featherweight title when she takes on Natasha Jones on April 24th.
The Britons are to challenge for the world title at Doncaster Dome. Harper claimed the title with a unanimous points victory over Finland’s long reigning Eva Wahlstrom at the Sheffield Arena in February, where Harper was competing in only her 10th fight. She has already recorded 5 knockouts.
Terri Harper is the UK’s second major female world champion, following Leeds boxer Nicola Adams, who is now retired and who was the WBO world flyweight champion.
She has said:
“I’m excited to go back to the Doncaster Dome where I made my professional debut
It’s going to be a bit special making the first defence of my WBC World Title in front of my hometown fans in Doncaster – I’m looking forward to the reception that I’m going to receive.
There’s a bit of pressure on me as I’ve just won the WBC belt and I don’t want to lose it on my first defence. I’m going to train like I haven’t even won it yet. I haven’t had much time to sit back and think about it all, it’s been very hectic but it’s time to get back to the serious training next week.
Hopefully we can start looking at other World Titles after April 24, but I just want to keep on enjoying what I’m doing, getting the wins, getting the experience under my belt and pushing forwards. I want to be fighting the best girls out there and challenging myself.”
The match will play live on Sky Sports. Ticket sales go live at 15:00 today. Adam Smith, Head of Sky Sports Boxing Development, said:
“We’re hugely excited for Terri Harper’s WBC Super-Featherweight Title clash against Natasha Jonas, a thrilling first defence for Britain’s new world champion against ‘Miss GB’.”
