Watford man admits to killing thirteen-year-old daughter
A man from Bushey, Watford, Hertfordshire, has admitted to causing the injuries which later killed his thirteen-year-old daughter, Maisie Newell. Her injuries included a fractured skull and brain injuries.
Dean Smith, 45, of Kingsfield Road, was arrested over injuries inflicted 13 years ago. They same injuries are alleged to have caused the subsequent death of the disabled girl who lived at and attended Terrington St Clement Community School.
Maisie died in Kings Lynn, Norfolk.
On February 12th, Mr Smith appeared at Willesden Magistrates Court where he was remanded in custody. The following day, at the Old Bailey’s Central Criminal Court, he appeared via video link from Wormwood Scrubs, where he pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Maisie Newell, 13.
It is alleged that he held his head in his hands and wept during the hearing.
The court heard that she suffered brain injuries after being thrown into her cot in 2000 aged just four weeks. Maisie died on 25 June 2014.
Dean Smith had previously pleaded not guilty to murder and is now set to go on trial in April.
Judge Richard Marks QC said the case was “extremely unusual.”
Watford man Mr Dean Smith admitted to killing his thirteen-year-old daughter and was charged with manslaughter on 12 February 2019.
He has been released on bail, and is expected to return to court for a plea and case management hearing on 2 May. A two-week trial has been fixed to start on 29 July.
