Police update on Rutland Street stabbing

Update on Rutland Street stabbing

We have been updated by Humberside Police that Grimsby’s Liam Milligan, of no fixed address, has been jailed for 15 years following an incident where he stabbed Jazz Kettlewell in Rutland Street, on October 14th 2019.

He was sentenced at Grimsby Crown Court.

Kettlewell was repeatedly stabbed in the body, arms and legs as he approached his home at around 2am.

He suffered two punctured lungs and multiple stab wounds.

Milligan used a knife to assault Kettlewell while an accomplice, who has not been named, also used a hammer to strike Mr Kettlewell as he got his door keys out.

On Kettlewell’s departure from a hospital in Hull, he received further threats from Milligan who allegedly shouted: “You’ll get it again.”

Humberside Police launched an attempted murder investigation after the attack which also involved 2 other men.

Milligan was convicted of wounding with intent, possessing a knife as an offensive weapon and intimidation; he admitted to separate charges of possession of a blade, possession of class B drugs and assaulting a police officer in his cell.

Judge Peter Kelson QC told Milligan: “You had a reputation as a thug. It will be long since forgotten. You tried to rule the streets but the police rule the streets and the justice system rule the streets.”

It is said that the victim is lucky to have survived, as Judge Peter Kelson QC told Milligan:

“Even when one of the three said ‘he has had enough. It is time to go’ you carried on. One resident saw it and said it was as if the three of you were toying with him.”

“It was horrifying. It was a shocking incident of violence.”

Milligan will be expected to serve an additional five years on license because of the substantial risk he poses to public safety.

He will, therefore, serve two-thirds of his sentence before he is eligible for parole, and will be subsequently be on licence. This means that any offence caused by Milligan during this time will result in an immediate recall to prison.

Humberside Police have been praised for their “thorough investigation.” Humberside Police Detective Inspector Kerry Bull said: “This was a serious and unprovoked attack during which a man was stabbed multiple times, leaving him with numerous, serious injuries.

The judge also imposed a three-year sentence for possession of a knife and another three years for intimidating Mr Kettlewell.

In an updated statement issued regarding the stabbing in Rutland Street, Humberside Police have stated that:

“I hope this significant sentence sends a clear a message to those who choose to carry a knife and that it acts as a deterrent to those who demonstrate reckless violence with little regard of the consequences.”

“We take all reports of knife crime extremely seriously and we work incredibly hard to take dangerous offenders off our streets to get them before the courts for justice to be served.”

This comes as Humberside Police report that another violent offender has been jailed for two decades.
