By More prisons to get X-ray body scanners.
The instant internal images can reveal concealed weapons, mobile phones and drugs.
After the scanners had reduced the number of failed drugs tested and More than 300 items of contraband had been detected. They have decided to install 16 more in the most challenging prisons, due to the xray being so successful.
The £28m scheme is part of a £100m spend on improving prison security.
HMP Bedford said in December:
”the prison which has an unacceptably high level of violence, suffered from the lack of a body scanner”.
The other prisons to benefit from the scheme are HMP Durham, Preston, Hewell, Lincoln, Norwich, Chelmsford, Winchester, Elmley, Pentonville, Bristol and Cardiff.
