World War three feared if travellers site is put on Nunsthorpe.
A public meeting was organised by Southward councillor Jane Bramley so that people on the Nunsthorpe estate could express their views over the shortlist of traveller sites. It is claimed that the sites on Wootton Road and Winchester Ave are ridiculous because they are either side of a new housing estate.
Fears were believed to have been raised by residents and tenants who believe that if they are put on there World War three will break out and nobody will be able to stop it.
Residents were told that the 15 peg site would require travellers to pay £14 a night. And their stays would be restricted to 14 day stays.
But it is thought that residents are skeptical over whether they would leave the site. Also how it would be policed.
Jane Bramley is thought to have had previous conversations with traveller groups that made her feel that the traveller community would prefer to have a site on the outskirts of town.
It is believed that years of trying to rid the Nunsthorpe Estate of a negative image could be setback by the move.
Residents were angry that Councillor John Fenty was not at the meeting but it is thought that he needs to remain neutral.
He will be happy to receive representation and views from local people if and when the issue goes out to public consultation.
