By If you have a passion for nature conservation, wildlife or just working outdoors, join North East Lincolnshire Council’s new Grounds Force.
Volunteers are being asked to get their hands dirty helping to look after North East Lincolnshire’s nature and wildlife.
Ecology officers from North East Lincolnshire Council will host the voluntary sessions across the borough every fortnight.
Different activities will take place on each day, including tree thinning, scrub and invasive species removal and clearing the sand dunes. More opportunities will be announced in due course.
The first event will be held on Monday 14 October from 10am to 2pm outside Cleethorpes Leisure Centre before heading to the Boating Lake.
The work will involve mainly grass raking with a bit of litter picking thrown in for good measure.
Councillor Stewart Swinburn, cabinet member for Environment at North East Lincolnshire Council, said:
“Volunteering is a great way to be active, meet new people and can benefit your mental health. We all want to live in a place that looks good and is well looked after. By working together, we can all take pride in our community. Grounds Force is about more than doing a day’s work, it’s also a great chance to learn more about the wildlife and the natural environment.”
North East Lincolnshire Council will provide you with the tools and equipment you’ll require, all you need to bring is your enthusiasm and possibly a packed lunch.
North East Lincolnshire Council ecology assistant, Gary Cooper, said: “Grounds Force is all about getting outdoors and being healthy while helping our wild habitats and native species.
“North East Lincolnshire has some of the most diverse and unique environments in the country, but we must work together to keep them in good condition.
“People are welcome to attend for the full day and bring a packed lunch or if they prefer, just do either the morning or afternoon session.”
Don’t worry if you can’t attend each session, there will be lots of chances to get involved.
You don’t need prior experience and will be allowed to go at your own pace. You can still take part if you can only do a couple of hours in the morning or afternoon.
