Nigel Farage has been criticised over a Brexit Party campaign video portraying Doncaster as an abandoned ghost town.
Mr Farage took to the stage at Doncaster Racecourse on Wednesday evening, as part of his nationwide ‘Make Britain Stronger’ tour. He was joined by MEPs from the Brexit Party, as well as prospective parliamentary candidates for the Doncaster area.
In his address to Brexit Party supporters, he called on Conservatives to step aside in the town so his party could defeat Labour, adding that the Labour party had abandoned its northern roots.
However, a video of the speech has come under fire from some quarters after being accompanied by footage of deserted streets, closed & shuttered shops, crumbling & seemingly abandoned town centre buildings.
The video clip was released through Mr Farage’s own personal Twitter account yesterday. It was accompanied by the message “The Labour Party thinks you are stupid and that they know better. It is now totally and utterly dominated from London. They represent the likes of Dalston, not Doncaster.” The tweet has now been shared more than 2,500 times.
Numerous people have taken to Twitter to criticise Mr Farage. By and large, supporters have commented on his speech and not on the video clip.
In the 2016 referendum, Doncaster voted to leave by 69% to 31% – one of the highest leave votes in Britain.
