St Hugh’s Hospital’s Community Cycle Ride Returns

St Hugh’s Hospital is giving the general public the chance to ride alongside four professional cyclists during its Ride with the Pros event, which returns next month.

Starting at the hospital on Peaks Lane in Grimsby at 9.30am on Saturday 21st September, the event gives the public the chance to meet some of the big names in British cycling, whether they are new or confident riders.

The pros taking part are this year’s Lincoln Grand Prix winner Tom Stewart, from Team Canyon dhb p/b Bloor Homes, and Russell Downing from the Giordana Cycling Racing Team.

Also joining in are up-and-coming talents Joe Laverick, who cycles for Madison Genesis, and Kieran Hotson, who is sponsored by TBW23 Stuart Hall Cycling Gett Taxi Bottecchia.
Both began their cycling careers with the NEL Lindsey Go-Ride club, which supports budding cyclists aged six to 16 and has been funded by St Hugh’s Hospital.

There are three 50km routes scheduled to take place and shorter 30km routes are available for less experienced cyclists.
The routes will take cyclists through neighbouring villages, including Waltham, East Ravendale, Swinhope, Ludborough and Tetney.

Ride with the Pros events, which have been held regularly for the last five years, are part of St Hugh’s Hospital’s health promotions programme to encourage people to lead healthy and active lifestyles.

A record number attended last year’s Ride with the Pros; more than 90 people, including those new to the sport, grabbed their kit to cycle with the professionals while enjoying Lincolnshire’s scenery.

St Hugh’s Hospital Director Ashley Brown and Community Officer Gary Allington will also complete the 70K route.
Gary said: “Ride with the Pros has proven itself to be a popular favourite over the years; it’s always good fun and we’re looking forward to another successful year.

“It’s a really informal ride along, so anyone with any level of cycling ability can join in – as long as they bring a helmet!
“The ride is a great way to keep fit and, once you get chatting with the others, you wouldn’t believe how quickly the miles whizz by!

“We get together to give people an opportunity to take part in group bike rides, to promote how fantastic the sport is and to help beginners to improve their skills – all while getting the chance to meet and cycle with professional athletes.”

Each group will be accompanied by experienced local riders from Lindsey Roads Cycling Club, to ensure everyone stays safe on the roads and to keep everyone on the route.

Refreshments courtesy of St Hugh’s Hospital will be available for everyone who attends, to help them recharge when they return.
