Town Centre Farmers’ Market to be a regular event

After a successful first session last Sunday, Doncaster will host a Farmers’ Market on the fourth Sunday of each month.

This is the latest addition to the facilities in Doncaster’s Wool Market.  It will be a boost for local producers able to sell their products to a wider audience.  It’s also hoped that it’ll attract the growing band of ‘green shoppers’.

Farmers’ Markets are liked by environmentalists, as buying local produce from farmers is a great way to cut down on carbon emissions and food miles.  Many local producers also use paper bags instead of plastic ones.  Several also cater specifically for ‘special diets such as vegan.

To make shopping at the new farmer’s markets easier, the council-owned car park next to the market is changing from a two hour to a four hour stay maximum stay.

There was a wide variety of stalls at the first Farmers’ Market, including Oski’s – chocolate makers from Bawtry, Queen of Olives – traditional Greek food, and Lollie Jade – cupcakes.  It is hoped that new producers will be attracted now that it is to become a regular event.  There are craft stalls as well as those selling food.

The next Farmers’ Market is on Sunday 22 September, from 10am – 4pm.
