Mcdonald’s paper straws cannot be recycled but do we really need straws?

It has emerged that the paper straws which McDonald’s bought in last year to be eco-friendly cannot be recycled.

When customers complained that the straws became soggy they decided to make them thicker. But they cannot now be recycled with normal paper. They have to be sent to landfill or burned for energy.

There are 1.8 million throwaway straws a day handed out at McDonald’s in the UK.

Friends of the Earth have suggested that the issue could be avoided simply by doing without straws.

Do we really need straws in our lives?

They should sell reusable metal straws, with a little cleaner pipe with them in a little storage box, like a jewellery box. I’d pay £3 or £4 for one! Branded with the McDonald’s logo they’d be a hit I think! It’d be handy to keep one in your handbag or car.
