Curtain To Go Up On New Junior Summer School To Showcase Local Talent

The longest-running Music Society in Grimsby and Cleethorpes is launching a Junior Summer School to mentor and showcase the wealth of young talent in the region.

Curtain Up Productions hopes to attract young performers, aged from 10-18 years, who will then have the opportunity to take part in a spectacular production of The Wizard Of Oz in August.

The company was formerly known as Grimsby and Cleethorpes Amateur Operatic Society and was formed in 1908. Over the years it has gone on to produce a diverse range of shows including Annie, 42nd Street, South Pacific, Jekyll and Hyde and The Full Monty.

The Junior Summer School will be led by a production team of three highly-experienced professionals from the world of Music and Drama. The young students will have the opportunity to audition for them on Sunday 28th April at the Memorial Hall, Cleethorpes, from 10am-1pm, with recalls taking place from 1pm-2pm.

Nicola Law, Producer and Director of the event, who is renowned for her participation in local musical societies such as Class Act, The Silhouettes  and MUS Productions, said students do not need to prepare a piece for the auditions.

We just want people to turn up who have a passion for performing and having a good time,” she said. “They will be involved in workshops throughout the day, in acting, singing and dancing, and will have the opportunity to audition for a lead role, only if they want to. There is absolutely no pressure, we just want people to come and get involved.”

The Junior Summer School workshops will begin at Humberston Academy on July 24th from 9am until 4.30pm each day. (If any students are still at school on July 24 they can begin the following day). The Wizard of Oz will take place at Havelock Academy on August 3 and 4, with performances at 2pm and 7pm on both days. Tickets will go on sale at the beginning of the workshop or on the door, priced £10 each.

Nicola, who is Head of The Creative Faculty at Humberston Academy, will be joined on the Summer School Production Team by Musical Director Joel Brown, a Music and Drama Teacher with a wealth of experience in Musical productions, and highly-qualified Dancer and Choreographer Lydia Grimble, who has toured the UK with The Jazz Company.

Nicola said: “Curtain Up had such a successful show back in January with our production of ‘Showstoppers’, taking the audience on a journey through the years of some of Broadway and the West End’s best hits. We wanted to include younger members within the production so we could celebrate all musicals such as ‘The Greatest Showman,’ which gave us the idea of inviting local school Humberston Academy to perform. This gave the society a new lease of life, bringing a new energy to the group. With this in mind, we decided that we wanted to create the Summer School for all local youngsters to get involved in and give students in the area the opportunity to perform on stage and learn new skills and stage craft. We really hope that we can reach out to the community and give the amazing children in this area a platform to perform on and the experience to shine. It is about showcasing the local talent we have and moulding our young students into performers.
