Safety works to the A18 have now been completed, the council have announced.

North East Lincolnshire Council have confirmed the completion of works to the A18 following a road safety improvement scheme which saw anti-skid surfacing and carriageway lining implemented.

The council’s project introduced serval improvements to the A18 with hopes to reduce current and future road accidents.

A new roundabout, carriageway widening, right turn facilities, and lower speed limits have all been included under the scheme!

In 2018, £2.8m joint funding was secured by the North East Lincolnshire Council (NELC) and EQUANS from the Department for Transport’s Safer Roads Fund.

Afterwards, a four-part background was designed to tackle safety risks that needed to be rectified, to minimise serious incidents in the future.

According to the council, the four phases were:

“Phase one: of the works began on site in January 2020 and focused on the road between the A18/A46 junction and Laceby Manor Golf Club. The carriageway was widened, while right-turn lanes were introduced at both Oaklands Hotel and Laceby Manor Golf Club. In addition, vehicle safety barriers were installed together with carriageway resurfacing and lining.

“Phase two: saw carriageway resurfacing work to a section of the A18 known as Waterdell between the Waltham Road and Ashby Hill junction.

“Phase three: involved the installation of a right-turn lane to Utterby from Barton Street, within Lincolnshire County Council’s boundary at the Barton Street and Lincoln Gate junction.

“Phase four: began in September 2021 with the construction of a roundabout on the A18 Waltham Road junction, which has replaced the previous T junction. These works were substantially completed in December and the road was reopened”

Further safety measures were subsequently introduced to ensure maximum safety.

A speed limit reduction to 40mph for both carriageways of the A18 Barton Street for motorists approaching the new roundabout was included in the plan.

A speed limit change from 50mphn to 40mph into Barnoldby le Beck village from the A18 will now be in place.

“The speed limit will extend along the A18 south of the new roundabout, to include a series of bends at Waterdell (this would make the current advisory 40mph limit mandatory)”, the council said.

The joint project was overseen and managed by the council and EQUANS.
