New Mayor holds environment and nature in plans
The new mayor of North East Lincolnshire wants more new trees planted and wildflower meadows sown to mark his mayoral year.
Steve Beasant, Lib Dem ward Councillor, held the environment and nature at the helm of his mayoral plans.
Councillor Beasant said money raised during his year will go towards funding for new trees and wildflowers, as he accepted his responsibility at the Mayor-Making ceremony.
He called on children to get involved to inspire them to preserve the national environment.
He is taking part in the Grimsby 10k next month to raise more money for planting trees.
“We are in an environmental crisis and another wildlife garden like Buffalo Bill at Grant Thorold is needed. We will be sowing more wildflower meadows and planting trees. We need to leave a legacy and hopefully, I can lead that to preserve our natural environment,” he said.
“It will be great to see all the schoolchildren getting involved. We want to see colour brought back to the borough and with the help of our children it can be there forever and a day.”
Councillor Beasant will mark 20 years as a councillor during his year of office.
He also referred to the former leader of North East Lincolnshire Council, Andrew DeFreitas.
“If it had not been for Andrew I would not have joined the Liberal Democrats. I have Andrew to thank in many ways,”
Out-going Mayor, Councillor David Hasthorpe said: “During the last three years, it has of course been a difficult time for many of us and I am only too aware that many here this evening will have experienced a loss within their families due to the pandemic. For that, I understand the sorrow that you and yours are suffering. It is my firm belief that Rob Walsh (Chief Executive) and the whole team handled the crisis admirably, for which we are all truly grateful.”
He added: “I want to convey my thanks to all of the key workers who kept the country running during unparalleled times. I must give huge thanks to our amazing NHS for their care, dedication, and skill, not only at that time but on a personal note, thank you for the wonderful care I received recently after a heart attack.
“Nothing was too much trouble and despite being treated poorly by some patients who were downright rude and disorderly, they continued to give their all in the pursuit of the health and wellbeing of all. Thank you.”
