Revamped station reopens

A North Lincolnshire train station’s brand-new £1.3m platform has now been completed and is fully re-open to passengers.

Barrow Haven’s station has received a full renovation, with a new 60m platform built for passengers travelling towards Barton-on-Humber or Grimsby, Cleethorpes and beyond.

As part of a programme to make stations more accessible, raised tactile paving has also been added along the length of the new platform, which will make journeys easier for visually impaired passengers and make sure that the station is safer for all.

East Midlands Railway have contributed a further £26,000 towards further upgrades – including a new waiting shelter, cycle racks and station signage as well as a solar-powered help point – completing the package of improvements at Barrow Haven.

It is hoped that the upgrades will promote greener travel by making train travel a much more attractive option for those heading towards the coast.

The station is now ready to welcome the community back to the railway, with passengers having full access to all the new facilities and no longer needing to travel to Barton-on-Humber or New Holland to board a train.

Sandy Lynch, Project Leader (Community Rail Lead) for Network Rail’s North and East Route, said: “I’m very pleased that Barrow Haven station has now re-opened. Located on the Barton line, this rural station provides a lifeline for the local community and these upgrades will really make a difference to passengers who use this station to get to work, go to school or pop to the shops.

“We have worked in partnership with East Midlands Railway to deliver a package of upgrades which passengers will really benefit from, and I’d like to thank the community for their support and patience during the station closure.”

Lisa Angus, Transition and Projects Director for East Midlands Railway, said: “We’re delighted that Barrow Haven station has re-opened.

“We would like to thank our customers for their patience whilst the station has been through a complete renovation. The significant investment has enabled us to deliver a whole package of upgrades, ensuring we provide a service which meets the needs of the community and will make journeys safer and easier in the future for all.”

A representative from the Friends of the Barton Line, said: “We’re delighted that Barrow Haven station has opened with added facilities such as the improved ramp, better signage, cycle racks and a new waiting shelter.

“Although the station is rural, it is used by lots of people including cyclists, ramblers along the Humber Bank, or people popping to the local pub. It is a great pleasure for us to be reopening the station today, with services bound for Barton or Cleethorpes calling at the station once more.”
