Petition launched to reopen railway to Louth

One ambitious Louth local has launched a petition to have the railway which ran from Grimsby to Louth reinstated.

In its entirity the East Lincolnshire Railway was a railway line which ran from Grimsby via Louth and south to Boston, Spalding, and onto Peterborough.

It operated via railway tracks which ran from Louth and Firsby, and Firsby to Mablethorpe.

The line sadly closed to passenger traffic in October 1970 and to freight traffic in December 1980, before the lines were removed completely a short while later.

Jamie Mascall wrote: “We NEED to find the best route possible to re-open the railway line from Louth to Firsby.

“I URGE East Lindsey District Council to protect both the Louth to Firsby, and the Firsby to Mablethorpe track beds so that they can be reused for railway use only!”

Network Rail has not ruled out reinstating the railway, stating that it is “assessing what is required for the area over the next thirty years, including but not limited to providing greater connectivity, accommodating more services and improving the links between different modes of transport.”

Although almost 6,000 people have signed the petition so far, this is not the first one of its kind to appear. Multiple people have already petitioned the council and the government with little success.

East Lindsey District Council have been approached for a comment.
