Locals doubtful of Freshney Place development despite council plans
Artists impressions showcasing what Freshney Place could look like following the council’s proposed developments have caused a split of opinion between residents.
Following North East Lincolnshire Council’s purchase of Freshney Place shopping centre earlier this year, a new consultation is taking place to gather locals opinions on the plans.
The consultation page sets out the council’s aims for the new development alongside new artist impressions of what the area could look like.
On their website the council states that the new design should appeal to all ages in the hopes of “giving us a reason to come back into our town centre.”
One major change to the shopping centre would be to the western end, with a new market hall at the centre of the scheme alongside new street food operators and entertainment space.
The project will aim to deliver a brand new five-screen local cinema, operated by Parkway Entertainment Ltd, complemented by family-focused leisure, restaurants and cafes.
However, despite the new images being released and the council taking consultation, many locals are dubious that the scheme will actually come to fruition.
One such local said: “Never going to happen. Loads of plans for the old Ice house but now close to collapsing. Plans for the land where the multi storey flats where.. still nothing done.”
Another added: “Really impressive, just have to see if it actually happens.”
Others referenced the other empty lots around the borough that have yet to see development: “Let’s hope it’s as successful for the local community as the replacements for the Wintergardens, Scartho Baths, Pleasure Island.”
Some felt concerned for the stall owners on the market who could lose their businesses: “I’m not sure I’m happy about the market being demolished. A lot of small businesses will be wiped out. What about developing the the empty building in St James square instead? It would cost a lot less.”
For those who wish to submit their views to the council they can do so online here or visit one of the pop-up consultation stalls in Freshney Place on Thursday 13 October or Saturday 15 October between 10am and 3pm at the Market Square.
Consultation ends Sunday 16 October.
