‘Edible Grimsby’ hopes to reinvent the harvest festival in surprising and delicious way
On Saturday 1st October, join the harvest and immerse yourself in the tastes, sights and sounds of a new, free event called ‘Edible Grimsby’ – being hosted in St James’ Square, from 12pm – 4pm.
Come along and enjoy a ‘community feast’ offering free food tasters prepared by ‘community chefs’ along with community members from all over North-East Lincolnshire.
Enjoy locally-sourced food and more produce from our traders, dance to live music from ‘Made in Grimsby’ artists and meet quirky walkabout characters.
This Edible Grimsby event is the big finale of a project supported by Grimsby Creates that started in early 2022 with the aim to bring people together to grow and cook food that is affordable and healthy for people and the planet.
Edible Grimsby works in partnership with Green futures Grimsby and the Community Food Coordinator at Sector Support NEL, who are engaging communities across North East Lincolnshire delivering a series of community growing and cooking projects.
One of the results of this work is the Collective Sauce, made in partnership with local sauce maker and DJ The Beatroot Collective, winners of Great Taste Awards for their stellar Scotch Bonnet Jam. This sauce has been made with produce donations from the local community.
The sauce will be on sale on the day at the Beatroot Collective stall with free bottles available to those who have contributed to it.
On 1st October, Edible Grimsby will be opened by the amazing Bombay Baja Brass Band, who will parade through town before bringing their uplifting and lively sounds to St James’ Square.
The Arti-sans are sure to raise a smile with their own artistic flair when they stop unsuspecting passers-by to draw their portraits – vegetable style!
On the day, you can meet ‘The Dinner Ladies’ – two good-time girls Freda and Rita who will be on hand to serve up a large dollop of foodie fun from their gorgeous serving trolley.
You might want to stay out of the way of ‘Los Skankos’, a family of musical Mediterranean waiters offering their ‘putrid pizzas’ and ‘polluted pastas’ whilst serenading you to stunning songs from Sorrento!
Join comedy chefs Hugh Fearn and Lee Whittingstall in the ‘Liver Cottage Kitchen’ as they present a cookery demonstration like no other. This culinary pair blends home grown ingredients with food foraged from the corner shop, the streets and of course the audience.
On the day, ‘Farmer Giles’ will be welcoming you to the ‘Wacky Patch’, where all ages can enjoy a fun harvest themed mini trail and Aba Daba Circus will host circus skills, so you can ‘grow your own’ talents.
And don’t miss the Earthbound Misfits with their stilt-walking chefs who have absolutely no Michelin stars, as well as The Very Hungry Caterpillar story-telling from Rhubarb Theatre – and more.
Get creative with artist Sarah Palmer, as she invites you to draw veg inspired designs at her Doodle Station, plus take part in fun fitness activities with Be Great Fitness.
There will also be a special ‘taste experience’ specially devised for this event by Grimsby-based creatives lowercase theatre in partnership with popular local chef Ruchita Green.
