Announcement of Liz Truss as PM prompts mixed reactions in Grimsby
After the campaign to become PM following a string of previous controversies leading to this, Ms. Truss delivered her victory speech by paying tribute first to her fellow candidates.
Residents of Grimsby and the surrounding area have now had their say, on Ms. Truss’ victory and her intentions to solve current issues facing many nationwide. There were many left with frustration as action is sorely needed on these issues, with one saying ‘What can she do now?’.
One resident said to BBC Look North ‘I think she will be a good prime minster’, with some even drawing parallels to Margaret Thatcher. Another was asked regarding Mr Johnson’s previous controversies and one woman said ‘We feel sad for him he did things he said he was going to do’.
“We would vote for him again, you can’t keep voting for the same party when they’re not doing their job.” another added despite twelve years of a Conservative government, another said they thought he ‘did his best really’.
“It’s been a hard-fought campaign. I think we have shown the depth and breadth of talent in our Conservative party” She said.
The new PM also gave thanks to ‘our outgoing leader, my friend, Boris Johnson. Ms. Truss said “Boris, you got Brexit done. You crushed Jeremy Corbyn. You rolled out the vaccine and you stood up to Vladimir Putin. You are admired from Kyiv to Carlisle.” Ms. Truss said.
A shop vendor highlighted the pressing current issues and mounting costs, asking Ms. Truss ‘What can she do for the people now?’.
Ms. Truss promised to ‘deliver’ on current issues, she said “I will deliver a bold plan to cut taxes and grow our economy. I will deliver on the energy crisis, dealing with people’s energy bills, but also dealing with the long-term issues we have on energy supply. And I will deliver on the National Health Service.” Ms. Truss said.
“Things are about to get much much worse for all the working class and everyone below so that’s homeless, elderly, disabled, low Income and/or those on benefits, students.” another said.
“Truss only cares about HERSELF and making the rich richer.” another added to the section.
“But we all will deliver for, all for our country, and I will make sure that we use all the fantastic talents of the Conservative Party: our brilliant Members of Parliament and peers, our fantastic councillors. Our MS, our MSPs, all of our councillors and activists and members right across our country. Because my friends, I know that we will deliver, we will deliver, we will deliver and we… and we… and we will deliver a great victory for the Conservative Party in 2024. Thank you.” she concluded.
‘God help us all, she’s not in the real world and couldn’t cope on what we have to live on/ cope with.’ a user said.
‘Good let’s get this country in order just hope her own party don’t stab her in the back like they did Boris.’ another added.
