Controlling man jailed after five years of relentless violence against ex-partner
A controlling man who kept his partner locked in a room without her mobile device and regularly assaulted her for over five years has been jailed.
Jordan Elm would lock his partner inside the residence, he would throw away her shoes and confiscate her mobile device, to keep her isolated in his twisted method.
Grimsby Crown Court heard how he would frequently assault his partner but would be conscious not to leave visible marks on her face, in an attempt to hide his violent behaviour.
Elm, 26, of Salisbury Close in Scunthorpe, admitted coercive and controlling behaviour between 2016 and 2021 and two offences of assault causing actual bodily harm.
Prosecuting Fatima Zafar told how the partner had described him as caring and considerate when they first began their relationship.
However, then things took and turn and the prosecutor said: “He told her she was fat and that she should die and hoped she got cancer. He blamed her for him behaving in such a way because he had not done so with previous girlfriends.”
She went on to say how Elm would take her devices away and how violent he became, attempting to strangle her on five to six occasions and throwing a heavy item at her.
On a date between May 30 and June 5 last year, the victim was staying with Elm’s mother when she noticed finger marks on the partner’s neck. On February 12, the court heard he tried to bite her nose and put his hands around her neck.
Police attended and interviewed the woman after one of her friends identified the injuries. Reading the victim impact statement, Ms. Zafar said: “I am not the same person I used to be and I have to take medication.
“I struggle with meeting other people. I can’t have male friends because he has made me feel that all men are like this and that all relationships will be like this. It scares me.” The couple moved homes several times and also lived in Keadby, near Scunthorpe for a while.
Judge Michael Fanning told Elm he had a public face of a good character but a private face that is different.
He jailed Elm for two years and five months.
