Brendan Kiernan joins the Mariners on loan from Walsall
The 29-year-old will play his football with the Mariners until January 2023.
Grimsby Town Football Club proudly welcomes Brendan Kiernan to Blundell Park who signs on loan from League Two opposition Walsall.
Kiernan signed his first professional contract with AFC Wimbledon after spells with Fulham and Crystal Palace’s Academy systems.
During his lengthy career, Kiernan enjoyed spells with clubs such as Bromley, Braintree, Hampton & Richmond borough, Welling United, Ebbsfleet United and Harrogate Town.
Kiernan enjoyed promotion with the Sulphurites to the English Football League in the 2019/20 season. During his two-year stay with the club, the 29-year-old made 76 appearances in all competitions, netting 14 goals.
In July 2021, Kiernan signed for Walsall after penning a two-year contract. The winger enjoyed an impressive first season with the Saddlers, making 41 appearances and scoring on six occasions.
Speaking to Grimsby Town Football Club after the deal had been confirmed, Kiernan said he is “looking forward” to his stay with the Mariners, adding: “I am pleased that Grimsby were interested and I am looking forward to getting started.
“I am looking forward to getting to know the boys. I just want to make things happen in and around the box, create chances, get my shots off and I just really want to drive the team on.
“When I knew the manager was interested, I had a good conversation with him, he had done his research and I had done mine and I thought it was a good fit for me.”
Town gaffer Paul Hurst said Kiernan will provide his match day squad with options:
“Brendan’s a player that is predominantly a wide player but can also play down the middle and I like the fact that he gives us another option as a striking option depending on what’s happening in the games.”
Adding:
“He had spells at Harrogate, I watched him score a hattrick for Harrogate against Cambridge prior to us playing them on the last game of the season and I have kept an eye on him.
“It is only until January, but we are open-minded on it on both sides to see how things go, but pleased we have added someone with another goal threat to the team, which is obviously important and as I said, has experience of the League, so I am pleased with his addition and adds more competition to the squad.”
Welcome to Blundell Park, Brendan!
