Man jailed after claiming he had firearms during rooftop standoff

A Grimsby man escaped from police onto a nearby roof after claiming he had a weapon, forming into a roof-top standoff.

Christopher London, 34, of Watford Avenue, admitted affray on Lily Mews off Werneth Road, Grimsby on May 13.

After a 25-minute stand-off altercation on the roof, London continued to make threats to the Police below.

Mr. London also admitted possession of cocaine and being in breach of a suspended sentence for driving whilst disqualified.

Hannah Turner, prosecuting at Grimsby Crown Court said police responded to calls at around 6 pm on May 13th to Lily Mews.

After Police arrived, London shouted, “I have a gun and I will shoot you.” He then moved to the roof and started to throw tiles at officers below.

He then shouted “Trust me I have a 9mm and a shotgun. I promise I will let this gun off.” Police surrounded the property but London then fled through a neighbour’s premises and over fences.

The prosecutor said an elderly woman of 100 years was affected by London throwing tiles as a window was shattered.

Police arrested London two days later in Welholme Road, where police found cocaine. He had 34 previous convictions for 86 offences.

Representing London, Dale Brook said his client was ashamed of what he did claiming he had panicked after police announced they had tasers.

London was sentenced to 12 months in prison and a further 12 weeks for breaching his suspended sentence.

Judge Mark Bury said “Because you were under the influence of alcohol you behaved outrageously. You had a police marker for firearms and the police worked on the basis that you had a gun.”
